BP says Gulf oil spill slowed as estimates of oil spilled increase

Thursday, May 27, 2010

A US Coast Guard official said today that BP’s latest effort to plug the Gulf of Mexico oil spill has been successful in slowing the amount of oil leaking from the well.

The official, Admiral Thad Allen, said that the procedure, known as a “top kill” operation, has been able to block some of the leaking oil at the source, the top of the damaged well. The operation involves pumping material into the well to plug the leak before cement is used to permanently seal the leak. Allen said the operation has “been able to force mud down and not allow any hydrocarbons to come up.”

BP hasn’t confirmed the success of the top kill operation, saying only that the “operation is proceeding as we planned it,” and that there had been no major incidents thus far. Although the possibility of failure is still present, experts say that the longer the procedure continues, the less likely it will be that anything goes wrong.

The procedure began yesterday afternoon, after diagnostics on the damaged equipment on the ocean’s surface indicated that it could withstand the added pressure of the mud being pumped into the well. Although engineers involved with the operation wore concerned that the pressure of the mud might not be able to overcome that of the oil, that has thus far not been the case.

Separately, a group of US scientists announced new estimates of how much oil was flowing from the well, ranging from 12,000 to 25,000 barrels a day, far higher than BP’s original estimate of 5,000 barrels a day, a figure which BP warned was possibly inaccurate.

In a press conference Thursday afternoon, US president Barack Obama also announced new measures in response to the spill, which include:

  • Suspending off-shore test drilling for six months
  • Extending the moratorium on issuing drilling permits for an additional six months
  • Cancelling the sale of leases for off-shore drilling.

In statements, Obama criticized the “scandalously close relationship” between government officials and oil companies in the past, saying that the Mineral Management Service, which is the agency responsible for monitoring off-shore drilling, had been corrupt for years.

Syrian-born youth killed while building bomb in Norway

Friday, August 19, 2005

A 17-year old Syrian-born youth was killed and his 19-year old brother seriously injured on Thursday by a bomb they are suspected of having been building in their Oslo flat. Several youths were being questioned by the police for suspected involvement.

The 19-year old brother is described as being in stable condition. Two women and one man, present but not injured when the suspected bomb exploded, are being questioned by investigators.

Police said they found instructions on making bombs downloaded from the internet at the scene. “At the scene we found written instructions on how to make explosives and some powder that the youngsters had mixed,” said police inspector Vidar Hjulstad speaking to Norwegian public radio NRK. [1]

A 20-year old Pakistani-born friend has been charged with illegal handling of expolosives and is being questioned by police.

The 17-year old has a large criminal record including 17 car thefts, threats, robbing a store, drug abuse and violence against a civil servant. He had reportedly been studying chemistry at Sofienberg Technical College.

Police said the target of the bombs might have been ticket machines on the Oslo transportation system, with the purpose of stealing the money they contain. “It looks most like [the dead 17-year old] had made the explosives to blow up ticket machines on the Oslo transport system,” said Oslo assistant chief of police Terje Kristiansen. He said a ticket machine in Oslo had recently been blown up. Police say they do not suspect any tie to Islamic extremism and Kristiansen said, “It looks like personal gain was the main cause.”[2]

A couple living near by anonymously said they had previously reported bomb-making activity at the apartment to police but had been ignored. They said ten people in total were involved in making bombs at the Oslo flat. “This is not the first explosion. We have heard many bangs and smelled lead or gunpowder afterwards,” the couple told Dagsavisen newspaper.[3] Kristiansen said he was not aware of their reports.

The entire apartment building has been evacuated as police investigate. They are said to be evaluating the risk of another accidental blast.

Nominations were declared on September 21 for South Gippsland Shire’s upcoming council elections, to be held by post from October 5-22. A total of 24 people in the Australian council’s three wards have put themselves forward to stand as candidates. The shire has been governed by administrators appointed by the Victorian state government since August 2019, when the council was sacked after a state government inquiry found “high levels of tension” within the council.

Wikinews interviewed one of the candidates standing in this election, Rosemary Cousin, via email. Cousin is endorsed by the Australian Greens, and is contesting the Tarwin Valley ward, which elects three councillors to the South Gippsland Shire Council, and includes the towns of Leongatha and Mirboo North.

Abducted Richmond Hill, Ontario man walks into police station

Friday, November 3, 2006

A Richmond Hill, Ontario man is currently released after he was abducted and escaped last night.

Chee Kian Jeff Chan, 28, was forced by three people into a black Mercedes SUV (which was caught on security camera) in the parking garage of his condominium at 23 Oneida Cresant in the Yonge Street and High Tech Road area. A small amount of blood was found at the scene. He was dropped off at an unnamed location in Toronto Wednesday night.

The suspects were wearing black clothes and balaclavas covering their faces at the time of the incident. The licence plate number of the Mercedes SUV is not known because there was no plate on the front of the vehicle.

Chan walked into the Major Mackenzie Dr. W. police station, at about 6:45 p.m. last night, suffering from injuries and went to a hospital for examination.

York Regional Police say that he is a poker player, after hearing about a man with the same name that took seventh place at the River Rock Casino Resort near Vancouver, British Columbia on November 19, 2005, earning him $44,753.

No ransom note was received and police believe that it was an extortion attempt.

“He was unaware of a lot of things during his ordeal,” Constable Laurie Perks said. “He didn’t know what they looked like. His vision was concealed and so he therefore didn’t know where he was through most of his ordeal.”

It is believed that Chan’s three captors released him after 28 hours because of the media coverage surrounding his disappearance.

The investigation is still ongoing.

Stolen minibus recovered 35 years after theft

Friday, November 6, 2009

A 1965 Volkswagen minibus that was stolen in 1974 has been recovered by customs agents in Los Angeles. The vintage minibus was in pristine condition, valued at $25,000, and was found during a routine inspection of a shipping container scheduled for departure to The Netherlands. A routine computer database search on its vehicle identification number flagged it as having been stolen from a vehicle upholstery shop in Spokane, Washington on July 12, 1974. A custom restoration business in Arizona was attempting to deliver it to overseas clients last month when authorities intercepted the vehicle.

“Pretty amazing, isn’t it?”

The theft appeared on the National Insurance Crime Bureau database, which is used by border authorities and contains all stolen vehicle records. Most police databases remove unsolved vehicle thefts after five years.

The California Highway Patrol does not suspect the restorer of wrongdoing, according to investigating officer Mike Maleta. Possession of the vehicle apparently changed several times. Police in Spokane have not yet located the rightful owner, whose identity has not been released to the press. Maleta hopes that a trail of registration documents and interviews will uncover the thief.

“[The restoration firm owner is] a victim himself. He was an innocent purchaser…”

The Allstate insurance company paid $2500 shortly after the theft occurred and wants to take possession of the vintage minibus. Allstate spokeswoman Megan Brunet expects that after the necessary paperwork is processed the firm will sell it at auction.

Archive360 Delivers Day-One Support for Microsoft Cognitive & Media Services and Microsoft Azure Arc by prpingNEW YORK, NY, September 28, 2017 – Microsoft Ignite September 25-29, Booth #1045 Archive360, the world’s leading provider of data migration and management solutions for the Microsoft cloud, today announced Archive2Azure’s day-one support for Microsoft Azure Cognitive & Media Services and Microsoft’s new Azure Archival storage tier. Eliminating time consuming, manual indexing of audio and video files frequently stored in SharePoint Online, OneDrive and Azure, Archive2Azure now expands on Microsoft machine learning capabilities for more intelligent and automated audio and video indexing, search, translation and transcription.Archive2Azure now also supports Microsoft’s new ultra-low-cost Azure Archival storage tier, lowering total storage ownership costs even further. Now Archive2Azure provides companies three Azure storage tiers, Hot, Cool, and Archival. Archive2Azure Cognitive & Media Services and Azure Archival storage tier support will be showcased during Microsoft Ignite, Orlando, Fla., September 25-29 in Archive360’s booth #1045.”The increasing volume of audio and video content stored in SharePoint Online, OneDrive and Azure has become a tedious management challenge for today’s enterprises including corporate legal departments for eDiscovery,” said Tibi Popp, Co-Founder and CTO, Archive360. “Traditionally, they’ve had little indexable data for search and discovery processes and both indexing and search has been largely done through time consuming and error-prone, manual processes. With our support out of the gate for Azure Cognitive & Media Services and the Azure Archival storage tier, we’re automating the indexing process, greatly speeding search and improving discovery accuracy while dramatically lowering total storage costs.” “Because indexing and searching audio and video files has been such a time-consuming process, many organizations have large stockpiles of these files that are difficult and costly to search and discover. This can present eDiscovery, compliance and governance challenges as well as policy-based management issues,” said George Crump, Chief Analyst and Founder, Storage Switzerland. “Archive360 is helping to solve this. By taking advantage of Microsoft’s new Azure capabilities such as Cognitive & Media Services and a low-cost Archival storage tier, they’re taking the cost and risk out of the retention and searchability of audio and video files.”Archive2Azure Cognitive & Media Services indexes audio and video files by spoken word, producing a complete transcription of the speech. Extending Microsoft machine learning, it can immediately translate content into one of 53 foreign languages and, in the near future, will even perform image tracking, facial recognition and emotion from video files. As a result, audio and video files have much more robust indexable metadata which greatly speeds search and dramatically raises accuracy over that of human search.Archive2Azure also now supports the new Azure Archival storage tier. Introduced by Microsoft this week, the Azure Archival storage tier, which joins Microsoft’s existing hot and cool storage tiers, enables a very low cost destination for the long-term archiving of low-touch and inactive files. Archive2Azure will support this new storage tier from day one via FastCollect for SharePoint Extension (see related announcement dated today and found here: http://www.archive360.com/news/), enabling SharePoint Online users to dramatically lower storage and information management costs.”Archive360 is always in lock step with Microsoft, delivering the most advanced functionality available to support new Microsoft developments upon their release,” said Bill Tolson, Vice President of Marketing for Archive360. “With the ability to automatically and intelligently index audio and video files, we’re now better able to support customers with large sets of this data type with the advanced solution they want to improve policy-based retention and disposition, discovery reliability and faster search.”Archive2Azure Cognitive & Media Services and Archive2Azure support for the Azure Archival storage tier are available now.
