Volume Controls Vs. Speaker Selectors

Submitted by: Jason Hersh

When setting up a stereo system in multiple rooms in your house, you may find yourself wondering whether you should use an additional receiver, in-wall volume controls, speaker selectors, or a combination of all three to control the sound in the various rooms. So what s the difference?

Most (but not all) receivers can support at least two audio zones. This will allow you to use the surround sound system to watch a movie in zone #1 and at the same time use a set of speakers in zone #2 to listen to music on your MP3 player. If you want to create more than two different zones, you may need an additional receiver. Your owner s manual should tell you how many zones your receiver can support. Remember though, an additional receiver will let you create more zones, but won t let you share the same source. So you can t play the same CD throughout the house during a party, for example.

A speaker selector is an accessory to your receiver, which will allow you to add speakers to your system without adding more zones. You can then choose which speakers you want to use for a specific output (a DVD player or MP3 player, for example) from your primary receiver. In the case of a two-zone receiver, zone #1 might include the living room and kitchen, and zone #2 might include the den and backyard. The speaker selector will allow you to watch a movie in the living room without blasting the movie soundtrack in the kitchen at the same time. You can turn the kitchen speakers off via the speaker selector, or if you ve installed separate volume controls in the kitchen, you can turn the volume down just in that room. At the same time, you could be playing music on an MP3 player in the backyard and turn off the speakers in the den. Note that each set of speakers must be wired to only one zone; so you can t mix and match rooms between zones unless you step up to a more complex system like a multi-zone controller or an audio matrix switch (these really need to be designed, wired, and installed by a professional).

Depending on which model you choose, a speaker selector will allow you to enjoy sound in up to 8 different sets of speakers (most speaker selectors are for 4-6-or 8 pairs of speakers). You can plan to spend anywhere from $100 to $500 on a speaker selector. Some selectors have volume control built in to the unit (so you won t need to put them in each room).

To simplify, a speaker selector is like an on/off switch for a particular set of speakers, except that it also protects your amplifier by preventing your various speakers from demanding too much power. Speaker selectors have other attributes as well, but this is the basic concept.

An in-wall volume control allows you to turn the volume up or down for a specific set of speakers while you are in the room. Unless you install in-wall volume control in the room where the speakers reside, you will have to monitor the volume for all your zones from your central receiver (not ideal unless you are in a building where you want to restrict volume access, like a doctor s office). Depending on the features you choose, the style, and the brand, volume controls cost anywhere from $30-100.

Receivers, speaker selectors and volume controls all work together to help you create the perfect sound experience throughout your home and outdoor space, whether you are expanding an existing surround sound system or building a completely new system.

Israeli PM Sharon rushed to hospital

Wednesday, January 4, 2006

Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon (born Ariel Sheinerman), 77, has been admitted to Hadassah hospital in Jerusalem, after suffering what doctors said was a “massive” stroke.

According to reports from Hadassah Ein Karem hospital in Jerusalem, the Prime Minister was put under an anesthetic prior to surgery to address a massive cerebral hemorrhage. He has increased intracranial pressure due to the bleeding.

White House press secretary Scott McClellan said in Thursday’s press briefing that its “thoughts and prayers” are with the Prime Minister, and that the White House will “continue to stay in touch with the government of Israel.”

With Sharon in the hospital, control of Israel has now been transferred to his deputy, vice-premier Ehud Olmert.

Dr. Shlomo Mor-Yosef, director of Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem said that Sharon suffered “a significant stroke” and that he was “under anesthetic and receiving breathing assistance.” Minutes later, Mor-Yosef said that initial tests showed Sharon suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and that he was suffering “massive bleeding and was being transferred to an operating theater.”

After over 6 hours of surgery Sharon received another CT scan which revealed further bleeding. Sharon was returned to the operating room for additional surgery that is expected to last several hours.

According to Wikipedia, “A stroke or cerebrovascular accident (CVA) occurs when the blood supply to a part of the brain is suddenly interrupted” and many news sources are reporting this situation is life threatening.

Last month on December 18th, Sharon suffered a minor stroke and was admitted to the Hadassah Ein Kerem hospital after feeling unwell driving home and having difficulties with his speech. During his treatment, he was found to have a minor hole in his heart and was scheduled for surgery on January 5th. Sharon was treated and released December 20th.

Sharon’s notorious overeating was a significant risk factor for the health complications he has experienced. Prior to his first stroke, he consumed a meal consisting of hamburgers, lamb, kebabs, steak in chimchurri sauce, and salad. Since that stroke Sharon had lost weight, though he had been known to have his security detail smuggle him pita filled with greasy meat during previous efforts.

On January 6th, in a front-page article in Canada’s The Globe and Mail newspaper, Canadian medical experts questioned the anticoagulent that Sharon had been receiving before his massive stroke, noting that the decision to use it may have cost him his life, and that he would have been unlikely to receive that treatment in Canada. They also noted that his prognosis for recovery is extremely poor.

Wikinews interviews 2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor Candidate Wayne Tseng

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Thursday, October 22, 2020

2020 Melbourne Lord Mayor candidate Wayne Tseng answered some questions about his campaign for the upcoming election from Wikinews. The Lord Mayor election in the Australian city is scheduled to take place this week.

Tseng runs a firm called eTranslate, which helps software developers to make the software available to the users. In the candidate’s questionnaire, Tseng said eTranslate had led to him working with all three tiers of the government. He previously belonged to the Australian Liberal Party, but has left since then, to run for mayorship as an independent candidate.

Tseng is of Chinese descent, having moved to Australia with his parents from Vietnam. Graduated in Brisbane, Tseng received his PhD in Melbourne and has been living in the city, he told Wikinews. Tseng also formed Chinese Precinct Chamber of Commerce, an organisation responsible for many “community bond building initiatives”, the Lord Mayor candidate told Wikinews.

Tseng discussed his plans for leading Melbourne, recovering from COVID-19, and “Democracy 2.0” to ensure concerns of minorities in the city were also heard. Tseng also focused on the importance of the multi-culture aspect and talked about making Melbourne the capital of the aboriginals. Tseng also explained why he thinks Melbourne is poised to be a world city by 2030.

Tseng’s deputy Lord Mayor candidate Gricol Yang is a Commercial Banker and works for ANZ Banking Group.

Currently, Sally Capp is the Lord Mayor of Melbourne, the Victorian capital. Capp was elected as an interim Lord Mayor in mid-2018 after the former Lord Mayor Robert Doyle resigned from his position after sexual assault allegations. Doyle served as the Lord Mayor of Melbourne for almost a decade since 2008.

Train derailed by collision with semi in Saskatchewan, Canada

Tuesday, March 22, 2005

Twenty-four cars of a west-bound Canada Pacific train were thrown from the tracks after the train collided with a semi tractor-trailer in poor weather and visibility near Regina, Saskatchewan around 11 a.m. Tuesday morning. The driver was rushed to hospital.

The accident took place on a level section of Highway 46 just north of Highway 1, about 25 kilometres east of Regina. The RCMP spokesperson reported the crossing is marked with lights, but weather may have played a role.

“Road conditions were wet and sloppy and it’s foggy,” RCMP Cpl. Brian Jones said to the CBC. The bad weather, including a heavy overnight snowfall, may have contributed to the accident.

Most of the 93 cars in the train were empty bulk transit cars, used for moving agricultural products such as grains. The RCMP report that neither train or truck were transporting any hazardous materials.

Plane crashes into Toronto office building

Wednesday, May 26, 2010

A Cirrus SR-20 aircraft crashed into an office building in Markham, a town near Toronto, at 12:30 p.m. local time yesterday. Both people on board were killed.

The aircraft, which crashed into the roof of the two-storey building at Woodbine and Hooper streets, was engulfed in flames. Witnesses say that it looked as if the pilot was trying to find somewhere to land and that the aircraft was trailing smoke and rolled before it crashed.

First reports state that the pilot and passenger were killed on impact, and the 14 employees at Thinkway Toys manufacturing all escaped the two-storey building and explosions from the crash.

The crash site is near Buttonville airport where many amateur and flight training flights occur.

Ford Uses Sync To Manage Illness On The Go

Submitted by: Bay Ridge Ford

In the last few years Americans have begun to take a more active role in managing their own health and well-being. Recognizing this trend, Ford researches are working on developing a series of health and wellness in-car connectivity solutions. These solutions are designed to empower people with self-help information while they drive.

Ford is using SYNC s ability to connect devices via Bluetooth, access cloud-based Internet services and control smartphone apps. They are developing voice-controlled in-car connections to an array of health aids including glucose monitoring devices, diabetes management services, Web-based allergen alert solutions and asthma management tools.

Ford SYNC is well known in the industry and with consumers as a successful in-car infotainment system, but we want to broaden the paradigm, transforming SYNC into a tool that can help improve people s lives as well as the driving experience, said Paul Mascarenas, chief technology officer and vice president, Ford Research and Innovation.

Constant Connections

Taking a smart, high-volume approach to bringing mobile health and wellness solutions inside the car, To develop some of the initial health and wellness programs Ford is using a high-volume approach; looking at two populations with the most need for constant connection to potentially life-saving information people with diabetes and those who suffer from allergies or have asthma.

According to the American Diabetes Association, nearly 26 million adults and children are currently living with diabetes in the U.S., that s over 3 million more than there were four years ago. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America reports that over 60 million Americans have asthma and/or have allergies.

Ford is working with experts in these fields to create relevant in-car features and services for those living with these ailments.

Ford s approach to health and wellness in the vehicle is not about trying to take on the role of a healthcare or medical provider, we re a car company, said Gary Strumolo, global manager, Interiors, Infotainment, Health & Wellness Research, Ford Research and Innovation. Our goal is not to interpret the data offered by the experts, but to work with them to develop intelligent ways for Ford vehicles using the power of SYNC. In essence, creating a secondary alert system and alternate outlet for real-time patient coaching services if you will.

Ford SYNC offers three unique ways to bring health and wellness connected services into the car:

Device connectivity via Bluetooth Leveraging Bluetooth, medical devices can be connected to the car to share information through SYNC; just like a driver can connect and access their cell phone or address book by voice control

Cloud-based services Ford s off-board network of location-based traffic, directions, and information providers that drivers can access through their cell phones. Known as SYNC Services, new services such as medical services can be easily added through this plug-and-play voice-controlled capability

AppLink this innovation allows smartphone apps to be accessed by drivers via voice commands. The SYNC application programming interface (API) allows app developers to enable their apps to communicate through SYNC, delivering a smarter way for drivers to manage apps while driving

The ongoing Ford health and wellness research projects include:

Glucose monitoring: A prototype system that allows Ford SYNC to connect via Bluetooth to a continuous glucose monitoring device and share glucose levels and trends through audio and a center stack display and provide secondary alerts if levels are too low.

Allergy alerts: Ford is working with SDI Health and www.pollen.com to SYNC-enable its smartphone Allergy Alert app through AppLink, giving users voice-controlled access to the app that provides location-based day-by-day index levels for pollen; asthma, cold and cough and ultraviolet sensitivity; as well as four-day forecasts.

WellDoc: Ford and WellDoc, a recognized leader in the emerging field of mHealth integrated services, have joined forces to integrate in-car accessibility to WellDoc s comprehensive cloud-based personalized solutions for those with asthma and diabetes through SYNC Services. Using voice commands, SYNC users could access and update their WellDoc profile to receive real-time patient coaching, behavioral education and medication adherence support based on their historic and current disease information.

WellDoc was founded on the concept of helping patients manage their disease with everyday, personal tools that are easy to use and can be easily accessed, said Dr. Anand K. Iyer, president and COO of WellDoc. Through our partnership with Ford, we ve created a unique in-vehicle environment that supports patients so they can continuously maintain their daily routines without interruption.

Well on the way

Ford is also examining other more long-term health and wellness technologies and ideas related to, for example, heart rate, and relaxation and reducing stress. Ford and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have long been studying the correlation between stressors and driving performance, wrapping up a nine-month advanced research project last fall that showed drivers are less stressed when using selected vehicle technologies such as Ford active park assist and cross-traffic alert.

Health and wellness provides a tremendous opportunity for Ford to provide peace of mind and a personal benefit to drivers and passengers while they are in our vehicles, said Strumolo. As more and more devices and technologies lend themselves to such connectivity in the car, it is our responsibility, our philosophy, to examine those possibilities and open our doors to industry relationships that can help us do it intelligently, efficiently and economically.
